Update!
It's been quite a while since I have posted anything here, this site is getting dusty as I do most of my social networking on Facebook!
To catch up since my last post :
The happy events:
In January 2017 Sara and I got married! Also, I left my job of 15 years in Maryland, sold our house, moved to a new house in Roanoke, Virginia and started a new job in Roanoke!
An unhappy event - my Father died on Dec 27, 2016 - heart just gave out, so it was quick and likely painless, he was found in his favorite chair in front of the TV. My brother, Greg, had to handle everything and I want to thank him for that. One of Greg's best friends (Gary) found Dad, and I want to thank him as well.
Currently I'm getting work done on the house, I knew it needed some repairs - a very nice fixer-upper. New roof and gutters, new HVAC, all the front windows were installed without proper caulking and insulation, and we replaced the sliding glass door in the back with french doors - way nicer.

Grrr
Just tried to update my Acer netbook from 1gb to 2gb - bought the exact ram Acer specified, Crucial agreed it was the correct one. It simply will not power up - the light comes on, but nothing else.
After trying every trick I could think of - even updating the BIOS to the latest and greatest version - nothing worked. So now I have a spare 2gb DDR3 Sodimm.

More virus emails
I just got an email claiming that I owed a lot of money to some company - and the invoice was attached in a zip file - be warned - never open or click on any attachment, zip, or link in any email unless you are very certain of where it came from.
This sort of infected attachment trick has been around a while and is now being used to spread some of the worst viruses out there, the ones that encrypt every file on your computer and tell you to pay $300 or so to get them decrypted. Nasty work. And they usually won't decrypt the files even if you pay, as many gullible people have discovered.
So backup your important files to something you can disconnect from your computer, a USB key or external hard drive.
And never open attachments or click links in emails you don't recognize.

Nasty new virus emails
I just got two emails that looked valid, but led to BAD places - infested sites that would have tried to infect my system just by visiting them. I have all of my emails set to never render the html code, but to show me the actual contents of the email in plain text, so I see the actual links next to what they claim the links were.
One said it was to Fox news and had some incredible headlines - but all of the supposed links actually led to the same webpage - not at Fox at all.
The other was 'Breaking News' and had some really interesting headlines - also all went to the same site even though they claimed to go to various news sites.
So what this boils down to is NEVER click on any link in any email, and never open any attachment on any email unless you are absolutely positive it is safe - that is, you know who sent it and were expecting it - they told you to expect it.
